Alfred Hitchcock’s 1927 silent classic The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog was his first thriller, his first critical and commercial success, and is generally acknowledged to be the film with which he found his distinctive “Hitchcockian” voice – he himself later called it “the first true Hitchcock movie.” 

Telling the story of the hunt for a Jack the Ripper-style serial killer called The Avenger, who targets young blonde-haired women, The Lodger foreshadows many of the themes and preoccupations that are now recognised as key elements of Hitchcock’s style. Ivor Novello stars as a mysterious new lodger who arrives at the home of Mr and Mrs Bunting, whose daughter Daisy, a blonde fashion model, is courted by Joe, a hapless policeman working the Avenger case. The lodger’s strange behaviour and interest in Daisy arouses suspicion, and the murders continue as they begin to grow closer.

Premiered in 2017 by Covent Garden Sinfonia at Yorkshire Silent Film Festival, renowned silent film pianist and composer Neil Brand’s acclaimed, Herrmann-tinged score has been heard throughout the world, including at the closing concert of Le Giornate del Cinema Muto, the famous Pordenone Silent Film Festival.
